Hits and Misses
This year I have done a lot more structured essays like a literary analysis and a personal narrative. Both of these essays were a new experience to me because I was so used to writing creative essays along with comparing and contrasting essays, and expository essays. So, this year has been a very developmental year for me in the writing department, but I did have some "hits and misses."
What I consider as a hit for my writing is any piece of writing that I feel I was able to have a flow of ideas, get my point across, tell an interesting story within those ideas, and learned a considerable amount about that writing style. So my hits this year have been blog posts and the personal narrative. Blog posts have allowed me to really develop my ideas into a constant flow and end at a good point. I never had written a blog post until this year, so doing two posts almost every week allows me to take some pride in these blog posts. The personal narrative called for writing skills that are my strong suit considering that it was more on the creative side. The vivid imagery that calls for telling a story is something that I enjoy and I learned a lot about how to do that even better. I also got my point across very strongly in that essay and can now write a personal narrative without looking for a template or second guessing myself.
The misses of the year are papers that tortured me and that I truly struggled with, which are the literary analysis and history paper. These papers were very structured and you had to write it a certain way with certain punctuation and evidence. I personally did not enjoy it at all. I struggled to string my ideas together and really drive home my point. Also, they required to much time and pre-writing and I lost my interest before we even started to actually write the paper. All in all, they were not my best papers and defiantly my "misses."

Anticipating Out Next Book
These eight statements required a lot of thought to decide if I agree strongly, agree, neither agree or disagree, disagree, or disagree strongly:
1. Ambition is a positive, desirable trait in a person- Agree
2. If you are in a position of power, you are happy- Neither agree or disagree3. Everyone is capable of lying, betrayal, and violence, which are basic parts of human nature- Strongly agree4. Who we are--our essential character and temperament--is fixed and unchangeable- Strongly disagree5. Women are more compassionate and less violent than men- Disagree6. Sometimes you have to do things other people consider wrong to get ahead- Neither agree or disagree7. Some things are destined or fated to happen- Agree8. If something is destined to happen, it will happen without your interference- Disagree
The two statements I am going to talk about are numbers four and seven. Number four states that "Who we are--our essential character and temperament-- is fixed and unchangeable." I strongly disagree with that statement. I believe that anyone can change who they are, but they have to do it themselves. No one can change another person without that person wanting to change. If someone wants to change, then they can. No one can force change on anyone else, but if I were that person, I would love support. Who we are today is not permanent we can change, it is just up to us.
Statement number seven says, "Some things are destined or fated to happen." I agree with that statement with a few reservations. I believe that something is destined to happen by our everyday actions and character. I believe that a person is eventually going to get what is coming to them, positively and/or negatively. Think about it, if someone is constantly doing whatever your image or wrong is, don't you think that something bad is going to happen to them? Or vice versa, if someone is always being positive they will probably be in a good place for the long run, right? But, everyone is destined to have good and bad in their lives, one just had to decide which side to act on.

How Do I Define 'Family'?
How do I define 'family'? Well to me family is a group of people who love each other, take care of one another, never leave, and fight for each other. So basically family is my strong hold. They are the people who pick me up when I fall and will drag me along if they have to. My family is the people I turn to when I need something. Family is something I value because we all value each other.
Most people think of their family as their mom, dad, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and all of that. Which is true, those people are all my family but there are more people in my family than what my blood reaches. My friends are my family, my coaches are my family, and my teammates are my family. Why? Because we value one another, we fight for each other, we are always there for one another, we love each other, and we take care of one another. Family is not something to take for granted, those people will always be there.

Purple Hibiscus
When I first started reading Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Adichie, I did not think I would enjoy it. It wasn't the kind of book that I usually read. I prefer mystery, action and adventure, and fantasy. So, for my bread and butter I chose to annotate because it would make me read intensely and in between the lines. My annotations have allowed me to notice hidden messages and come up with questions to ask in class rather than aimlessly reading.
Now I am really enjoying this book. I like the characters and how they affect each other, the overall plot, and the different versions of freedom. I think that is because that is what I understand the best and what my annotations focus on. I have a harder time seeing other themes within the story and fully connecting the title to the story, which I can fix by broadening my annotations. But overall, I am enjoying and understanding the majority of this book.

Politics and Military
The article, "Trump's Mix of Politics and Military Is Faulted" was written in the New York Times by Michael R. Gordon. The main idea of this article is that the military is not a place politics is and should be present and how President Trump is making it seem political. Mark Hurtling, a retired Army general, makes the point that military men and women take an oath to protect the Constitution, not "certain politicians." The article goes on to explain how President Trump is approaching the military, opening his speeches with political poles, promoting political movements and people, and depicting these men and women like voters, not military people.
The president forming a relationship with the military is important, but talking to them as if he is still campaigning to them blemishes what they stand for. They are not fighting for just the politicians, they are fighting to defend the constitution and everyone who lives behind it. President Trump does thank the soldiers and is making an effort to get the military behind him, as he should. But, politics should not be present in the military to avoid desertion and division within the military. The military must exhibit unity, a strong, undivided team.
I chose this article because I have always had a dream to possibly be in the military and I am not huge into politics. So I thought why not try and find something to read with both topics. I cannot form any solid opinions about President Trump and the military because I do not know if he is the only politician to do this and if the way he approaches the military is completely out of line, but in my opinion the overall point is the same, politics and military should not mix, ever.

Free Post
This weekend my grandparents, my aunt, and her dog came to Baton Rouge to watch Jackson and I's sporting events. My family has always shown great support towards my athletics that seem to consume my time. They tell me all the time that they are proud of me and to keep doing what I'm doing as long as I love what I do. I took that into great consideration as I was standing in the blazing hot sun with cheap sunglasses out in center field. I thought to myself, "Is this what I love to do? Play sports? Spending all day, everyday with the same people? Losing sleep out of stress or excitement for the next game?"
I answered with yes. Not a lot of people do. Some people would rather play video games, paint, draw, play music, do nothing, or a number of other things. I think that sports are my way to express myself and to develop the best "me," and that a lot of people would agree. Whether you also like to play sports, write, preform on stage, sing, dance, or sculpt, make sure you love what you are doing. If you love what you're doing it will teach you many things. Doing what you love allows you to stop stressing about the tests you have, the boat load of homework, and the amount of sleep you are going to loose. Enjoy yourself but do not take this as an excuse the procrastinate, use it as a tool to cope with stress and anxiety.

Learning Reflection
This year has gone by surprisingly fast. It is already the fourth quarter. Over the course of this year I have developed as a person, a reader, and a writer. I have always been a strong reader. I read in my free time usually, if I have any. This year, I have been able to read critically and figure out and understand more about the characters, plot, and the author's meaning to the story. These critical reading skills allow me to take good notes and be prepared to learn in depth whenever I read and remember what I read.
I personally have become more relaxed when test taking because I am confident in my reading and writing skills. My vocabulary has increased and grammatical mistakes have decreased, which is always good. These things have all gone towards how I write and edit a paper. Creating a detailed outline with good analysis has become my key to writing a paper that gets my point across. Putting all of these ideas together with transitions has always been what takes me the longest and is where I feel my grade suffers a little. So hopefully, my knowledge that I gain when I read, increased vocabulary, and newly found confidence will allow me to write stronger transitions and create the best flow of ideas.

Song Analysis
The Lonely by Christina Perri is a song that contains many poetic devices because it is a very profound song. One thing that I found that Christina Perri uses to draw attention to loneliness and its growing effect is assonance with the long and short o sounds;
"Too afraid to go inside
for the pain of one more loveless night
cause the loneliness will stay with me
and hold me till I fall asleep"
Also, personification is very present in this song. Throughout the song Christina refers to loneliness as the lonely and singing about is as if it is a human. She tells us about the lonely dancing, crying, and letting someone or something go to let the lonely in. So, Christina Perri uses personification to make the listeners really feel how strong loneliness really is, strong enough to be portrayed as a person.
Lastly, Christina Perri uses imagery to illustrate how loneliness makes a person feel. She describes herself as a ghost, a shell, broken pieces, and how loneliness follows her and fills her heart. All of these things show how loneliness changes how one acts, looks, and feels. Loneliness is a surrounding emotion that can definitely shatter one's moral. Overall, Christina Perri uses assonance, personification, and imagery to make the listeners understand what she is feeling and what loneliness is doing to her.

Free Post
I had an amazing experience on Tuesday, February 28th. Our basketball team traveled to Southeastern University to play in the semi-finals of the state tournament against Northlake Christian. The arena we played in was a lot bigger and fancier than any gym I have ever played in. It was an expected awe. I mean it is a college basketball arena, it's going to be a little different from the Phillips Gym.
Even before the game started people were screaming and I could not hear myself think. We were all so proud of our team for making it that far. Throughout the game the loudness continued and the nerves did not settle down. The team began to loose and we started to feel defeated but we kept our chins up and did not stop cheering and fighting until the buzzer sounded. To our surprise, we lost. We were all in shock and tears, but we constantly talked about how much we have grown. We told each other thank you for such an amazing season and how we all feel like sisters and we wouldn't have wanted to spend the last 7 months of basketball, weekends, bus rides, and more with anyone else. I will never forget this past basketball season and all of my teammates. I am so happy to have gotten the chance to go to Southeastern because that is not something that happens to every team every year.

Vocabulary
Throughout my time working on vocab.com, I have answered 2,244 questions, scored 324,275 points, and spent a grand total of 6 hours and 11 minutes on this website. I have seen words I have been using for a long time and some that I have never heard of. Ever. For example the words tawdry. I'll use it in a sentence for you. The rug was very tawny, but interestingly enough it was very soft. Tawny means "having the color of tanned leather." Who ever thought of that word? That is why words interest me because I know that I would've never come up with these crazy words.
Here are some more examples of words that intrigue me;
-The dessert I had was saccharine.
Saccharine means overly sweet.
- My back was assuaged by my message therapist.
Assuage means to provide physical relief, as from pain.
-Without glasses, people are amorphous.
Amorphous means having no definite form or distinct shape.
My point is, words are fascinating. There are probably millions of words that you do not know so go and expand your vocabulary and exceed expectations.

Sickness
Sickness is an internal monster
It causes one to feel lower
The feeling eats at your insides
It tears at your muscles
Sickness is like a slithering snake waiting to strike
Your head spins like a turntable
You are constantly walking through a tar pit
Sickness is not immortal,
it can be beaten
With an equally powerful force
Along with the help of time

ATDPTI- Response 2
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a title that applies to Junior and comes with consequences. Junior lost the respect of most people in the reservation and he lost his best friend Rowdy when he decided to go to Reardon. Alexie makes this conflict see more silly than it actually is by using humor to cover the seriousness of it up. It actually is a good strategy for the young audience she is writing this book for.
Junior's time at Reardon is not too much better than his time at the reservation. The only person who seems to care about him is Gordy. Gordy is like the nerdy and white version of Rowdy. I feel that Gordy is a representation of the opposite of what Junior thinks the white people at Reardon will treat him like. Gordy is accepting of Junior and likes to hang out to with Junior and they are both outsiders because Gordy is super smart and Junior is an Indian. Alexie does a good job with creating special relationship and interactions between Junior and other characters like his sister, Rowdy, his dad, his grandmother, Penelope, the reservation, and all of the people at Reardon. Alexis's message is starting to get clearer through these relationships and I'm excited to see the full picture once we finish reading.

Research
This research project has taught e a lot of things. One of them is how to organize and analyze your sources. I have never done a research project this big, so using Gale Database and doing notecards really helped my paper and thoughts stay organize. Organization of a research paper is a key factor to writing a sufficient paper, so knowing what you're going to do has great value.
The other thing have I learned throughout this research project is all the details within the camps during the Holocaust. I knew that they were treated brutally and forced to work all day without food and water, but I did not know the specifics. Once I read through around five medical experiments and a few articles about the daily process of a prisoner I had to take a break from my work because my findings were horrible. Reading about things is sometimes worse than watching a documentary about it because your mind is the movie theatre so it exaggerates things, but I do not think what I can think up is any worse than the fear and pain the Jews went through.

Wednesday
I spent majority of my time on my research paper in class and it is coming along pretty well. I got most of my reading time this week from reading Michael Vey 6: Fall of Hades and fishing The Red Queen.
Why is the post titled Wednesday if I'm talking about my reading time? Because I'm not actually going to. All my life I've been told that I have very high pain tolerance. Honestly, I didn't really believe them. Yes I have had a few concussions, broken bones, scrapes, and bruises but nothing that hurt too bad, until Wednesday.
I was at basketball practice and I guess my foot slipped or I step on one of my teammate's feet and my foot went the wrong way. I am not really sure but I went home and the next day my foot was swollen and it sort of hurt to walk. But I ignored it because we had a JV game that day that I had to play in. So guess what I did, I played. I limped around most of the game but I played the whole game and when I woke up the next morning I could not walk at all. My mom actually had to carry me to the couch. So, that day I hobbled around like a penguin everywhere as some of you probably saw, and I did not practice that Friday night. After practice I went to the Orthopedic Clinic on Bluebonnet and found out that I strained two things and possibly fractured my foot again. Which means, I am in a boot. I am not sure how long I will be in the boot but I am getting an MRI on Tuesday to find out. Hopefully it's just the two strains and not a fracture. High pain tolerance can be a good thing and a bad thing, in this case it was bad. I did not listen to the pain I was feeling and possibly hurt my foot really bad. So my advice to you all is to listen to your body.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
The weekend Dr.D gave us this book by Sherman Alexie I went home and saw that we had to read 53 pages. I was not bothered by this because I am a fast reader, so I sat down on my couch and started reading. I finished the reading in fifteen minutes.
I enjoyed the cartoons that Junior drew and the language he used to describe his life and his differences compared to white people and the other Indians living around him. Alexie uses descriptive words to help the reader visualize what Junior's everyday life is like and gives the readers good background information. The mood in the beginning of the book fit with Junior's character, fun, creative, and hopeful. Once Junior started to be doubtful and upset, I started to doubt and be upset which shows that readers get involved in the story easily. I am enjoying this book so far and I am excited to see what the book holds in the future.

Research Topic
My research topic is about the Jews during the Holocaust and how what they went through affected them. I am interested in this topic because I went to the Holocaust Museum last year and what I saw was extremely sad and was worth me knowing more. It should be interesting to you all because everyone knows the general idea of what happened during the Holocaust but not a lot of people know EXACTLY what happened.
The Jews were hated before World War II even began. This idea is called anti-semitism. Hitler thought of Jews as Satan's people and that they were not human beings and had no right to live. So, once Jews were brought into concentration camps like Auschwitz, Dachu, and Belzec, they were beaten, tortured, mass murdered, gassed, used as medical experiments and more. One experiment that really horrified me was when a Nazi doctor was studying how the human body responds to extremely cold temperatures. Jews were thrown into water that was freezing cold with no clothes and stayed there until they passed out. The doctors would then take the bodies out and take blood samples and study them. The Jews that survived medical experiments were then thrown into the gas chambers and killed so information about those medical experiments were not leaked into the world. That was just one specific about what the Jews in concentration camps went through. There are so much more and if your interested go find out.

That was just one specific about what the Jews in concentration camps went through. There are so much more and if your interested go find out.
Time Management
I always had pretty great time management in middle school, but that was because I knew exactly how much time it took me to do everything and I knew how each teacher's system worked and how the school functioned. Ironically, understanding all of those things takes time, it is not a fast process and will not just take a few days to get it under control. I have learned how this school functions, how long it takes me personally to complete my assignments, and what my teacher wants. My time management is now back under control and I am less stressed.
I plan to keep the system I have come up with and try not to change it too much. Using tutorials and study halls wisely is the key to me being successful in school because of sports. Also, being less stressed allows me to enjoy myself and my friends more. I am not worried about how I will get my geometry homework done or time to study for my biology test because I have a plan. I can go through a class and give the teacher my full attention without worrying about anything else. I cannot say no that time management is under control I can let up on my hard work, what I'm saying is I can learn and spend time with my friends less stressed and more relaxed.

Winter Break
Winter break was pretty full of activities, so I had little down time. I had basketball practice almost everyday and three games on December 27th, 28th, and 29th. We only got December 23rd, 24th, and 25th off over the break. I am not complaining though, I enjoy playing basketball so it was not a problem for me. If I wasn't playing basketball here I was playing with my brother outside or beating him in cards. Also, I spent time with my family. My cousins came on the 23rd and left on the 24th but for that one day we had so much fun.
We decorated Christmas cookies, had a marshmallow fight, watch Christmas movies, worked puzzles, played cards and basketball, and flew my brother's drone outside. My three cousins, my brother, and I are used to being together for very short amounts of time so we do not take one second for granted. It was also great to see my aunt and uncle for the first time in forever.
Christmas day was interesting because it was only my brother, my parents, and me, which is odd for my family because we are used to our 16 person Christmas. That wasn't able to happen because of our crazy schedules. Winter break was very enjoyable and as always I wish it had been longer.

Research Update
My research is going pretty well right now. I might need a few more sources for one topic for the answer to my question, but I have found all of my other sources easily. The easiest parts of the project so far has been finding and pulling information form the sources. Either I am very interested in the topic of the Holocaust, or reading comprehension is something I excel at, or both. I am enjoying the learning part of this project, but I am not looking forward to writing my paper.
The struggles I am running into or have come across in the past couple weeks have been random. The first problem I had was finding primary sources. I eventually found some after around 20 minutes of digging, I figured out that my search terms were not corresponding to what I wanted to find. The second problem I had was coming up with a question. I thought about it for a long time and eventually I asked Ms. Howell for help and we went through and found a common thread throughout my sources. I used the common thread of inhumane treatment and psychology to come up with the question of: What were the inhumane events the Jews went through in the Holocaust and how did it affect them? The last problem I seem to be having is the usual work ethic is not there for this project when it comes to the notecards. I'm not really sure why, I mean notecards are useful to achieve the overall goal of writing this paper. But overall I think this project is going well and I will try to bring my work ethic to these notecards and get them done.
